Harpers Ferry Harpers Ferry, town (1990 pop. 308), Jefferson co., easternmost W Va., at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers; inc. 1763. The town is a tourist attraction, known for its history and its scenic beauty. John Brown 's seizure of the U.S. arsenal there on Oct. 16, 1859, and the town's subsequent strategic importance during the Civil War, when it was considered the key to the Shenandoah valley , brought it into national prominence. In 1747, Robert Harper, a millwright, established a ferry at the junction of the two riversâ€"hence the town's name. The U.S. arsenal was located there in 1796, and by the mid-19th cent., Harpers Ferry was an important arms-producing center, with mills, numerous gun factories, and huge stores of weapons and ammunition. The development of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and of the Baltimore Ohio RR increased its importance, making it a transportation link between the Ohio valley and the East. During the Civil War it was primarily held by Union soldiers but changed hands a number of times. Its industrial plant was repeatedly destroyed by troops of both sides. Harpers Ferry never recovered economically, and a series of devastating floods in the late 19th cent. ended all hopes for revival. Despite continued flooding during the 20th cent., many old buildings remain. Of interest are the fire engine house in which John Brown was captured; the John Brown Museum; and the old steps, hand-carved (early 1800s) into the natural stone, which lead to Robert Harper's house (1775â€"82) and to Jefferson Rock. Due to the increasing public outcry, it is more important than ever to have an enforced code of ethics or CofE. Currently, the organization I work for, PBC, does not have a code of ethics. Chapter One: Literature Review 1.1 Introduction The worldwide prevalence of type 2 diabetes is skyrocketing alarmingly to epidemic proportions. According to King, Aubert and Herman (1998), in the year 2000 there were 150 million people with type 2 diabetes worldwide, and this number is expected to double by 2025. This explosive increase in type 2 diabetes prevalence is also associated with a significant increase in morbidity and mortality. (Dankner, Abdul-Ghani, Gerber, Chetit, Wainstein and Raz, 2007). This global increase in diabetes will occur because of population ageing and growth, and because of increasing trends towards obesity, unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles. Worldwide, according to the WHO Diabetes Action Now†¦show more content†¦Results also showed that eating patterns were influenced by participants’ knowledge of diabetes management. Participants stated that they needed to receive more detailed, individualised training to resolve the challenges faced in the daily management of diabetes. As befo re, these results show that specific interventions aimed at improving patients’ ability to modify their diet need to address this area. An Irish quantitative study conducted by Clarke (2009) which explored the behaviours of people newly diagnosed with diabetes. The convenience sample (n=168), who were recruited at group education clinics, took part in a correlational, longitudinal study. Dietary behaviour was measured using a modified Dobson’s 17-item Short Fat Questionnaire. 50% of participants reported non-adherence to recommended dietary fat intake. Study findings indicate that healthcare providers need to assess the perceptions of newly-diagnosed diabetics and subsequently provide tailored education programmes. This supports the findings of Savoca and Miller (2001), Nagelkerk et al (2006) and Williamson et al (2000) who agree that the current group education delivery may not meet the needs of the person with diabetes. His cognitive abilities with memory and problem solving were above average and Maria felt he was always learning to do wings by himself. They had a very close relationship and while she was very caring Maria was also very strict. She would punish her son’s with timeouts and if necessary she would spank them. The lack of his father did not have any negative effects on Jean’s development. Instead, Maria believes this made Juan want to be a better man for his mother and his brothers. Juan had a large circle of friends. He was never the type to stay inside playing video games or watching television. Juan loved to be outdoors and was very active, He loved soccer in basketball later in his adolescence and was very skilled at all physical activities he participated in, Jean’s older brother’s spoke tit him about sexual maturation and puberty. He developed normally and did not go through any negative effects because of this. He did not struggle with his weight because he and his brothers were so active. He was generally happy going through all the different stages in life. Maria believes in teaching a child to feels good about themselves and not to think about what others are saying. His social and emotional needs did not interfere with his way of thinking because he was always given the chance to express his feelings and thoughts with his family. Juan said that he was ware of his social status and he felt the need to behave in a way that maintains his positive image. Any behavior that may be socially unacceptable to his peers, elders, or mother was not acceptable. He was never into drugs or drinking. Juan always wanted to keep his nose clean and make Maria proud. As he was going through the four identity stage, he was most worried about his self-identity. Without a father Juan sometimes struggled making decisions that would prove he was a good young man. He questioned what was right and wrong sometimes, but he always looked to his other and thought if she would approve or not. Jean’s self-esteem and values were very high, he never let any factors affects his life negatively. Juan is an honorable and respectful young man who has a bright future ahead of him. He developed normally and did not go through any negative effects because of this. He did not struggle with his weight because he and his brothers were so active. He was generally happy going through all the different stages in life. Maria believes in teaching a child to feels good about themselves and not to think about what others are saying. His social and emotional needs did not interfere with his way of thinking because he was always given the chance to express his feelings and thoughts with his family. Juan said that he was ware of his social status and he felt the need to behave in a way that maintains his positive image. Any behavior that may be socially unacceptable to his peers, elders, or mother was not acceptable. He was never into drugs or drinking. Juan always wanted to keep his nose clean and make Maria proud. As he was going through the four identity stage, he was most worried about his self-identity. Without a father Juan sometimes struggled making decisions that would prove he was a good young man. He questioned what was right and wrong sometimes, but he always looked to his other and thought if she would approve or not. Jean’s self-esteem and values were very high, he never let any factors affects his life negatively. Juan is an honorable and respectful young man who has a bright future ahead of him. His amazing mother, Maria did a commendable Job raising him as a single mother and she is doing everything in her power to raise Juan in the right way.
